The Barbadoes Street Cemetery, Christchurch's oldest, was first opened in 1851. Between April 1851 and May 1873 at least 7,000 burials took place here. Many of the burials were of children who died in epidemic of Diphtheria, Typhoid and Fever. The Cemetery itself is divided by Barbadoes Street separating the Anglican (Church of England) section, on the eastern side, from the Roman Catholic and Dissenters (others) section on the west.
